  1. really smooth and hilarious storytelling
  2. Cat is cute
  3. clear story and kept a constant framerate
  4. The way using color to show emotions
  5. The scenes of the animation and the changing of colours are smooth and the cat is cute!
  6. high completeness
  7. I choose it as my most favorite animation because I think the story is expressed in a relaxed and happy way. I enjoyed watching it. They depicted the details and every emotion of the cat. The whole animation is very coherent. The style is very united throughout the animation. It is especially hard when they choose computer drawing to make an animation and they did a good job.
  8. Meaningful
  9. Good choice of music as the music help a lot in creating the atmosphere.
  10. very good idea
  11. The colors of the cat are changing interestingly and logically.
  12. the changing of colors of the cat, and the style used
  13. The theme of it fits the current social issue and they use a fun way to express the situation of the people in the whole world.
  14. The combination of drawing and real photo background
  15. colorful animation and fun to watch

Improvements

  1. the color of the cat has switched to many times
  2. add even more motions
  3. Avoid instance change of colors
  4. The time of each slide show could be better, like some slide could stay longer.
  5. As what Peter has said, the animation would be more interesting if they can add the habits of a cat rather than being too humanoid.
  6. the scenes move a bit too fast, if have longer time it would be better.
  7. I think the scene of the cat drinking sanitizer can be slower.
  8. More detail
  9. the background can be more simple
  10. I cannot think of.
  11. maybe some more details on the reasons of the cat actions?
  12. The cat might not be the most suitable figure if they use human it may be better since human is the one who suffered in the virus.

Group 8 – Origin of Life (17 votes)

Origin of Life

Good

  1. great for using the fruits to present your work.

  10. interesting video editing
  11. the idea of using fruits to do a stop motion animation is interesting
  12. I like the materials of fruits
  13. I like the parts of the dragon fruit and the broccoli!
  14. Creative

Improvement

  1. the light of shooting the animation
  2. I think it is great.

  9. the theme and content of the video is interesting
  10. I think the Mama Mia back ground music quite match the animation style
  11. I think this is the funniest one because of their choice of music and the characters in the story. The barbies always have fake smiling faces and they suit the humorous scenes when they are doing something abnormal. I think the collage scenes are beautiful also.

  2. the music transition is harsh though and there is always room for more funkiness
  3. The transitions of music could be improved.
  4. Music can be changed into 1 music
  5. The connection between different scenes can be better.
  6. make it longer, add more detail
  7. The story could be more interesting
  8. the music disappears suddenly and appears suddenly, if they can use an effect to make the music fade in and out, it will be better.
  9. it will be better if the storyline is more clear
  10. I feel like the background music switched too suddenly and end weirdly (the sound effect)
  11. I think the introduction of the scene of eye ball cutting the onion can be introduced more well as it is introduced quite suddenly.

  4. the paper cut, background and other decoration look good and cute
  5. the tearing scene

Improvement

  1. As what Peter and Bryan have said, the transition should be more fluent and the ET eyes of the fear scene can get into the screen from the right-hand side to improve coherence. Also, the paper cut of the first scene can be more refined as there are still pencil notes on the paper cuts.

Workshop

Part 1 (brainstorming – 15 minutes)

  1. Each member in your group will write down 5 recent events randomly.
  2. Try not think too much about each sentence.
  3. Each event is a sentence that comes with a structure (subject + verb + adjective/adverb + object), preferably, the verb is related to action.
  4. Example of such sentence is: Bryan eats a lot of bananas or Peter wears a trendy mask.
  5. Compile a list of all the events in a shared Google document of your group.

Part 2 (exquisite corpse – 20 minutes)

  1. Swap the subject, verb, adjective/adverb, object among all the sentences and come up with a new list.
  2. For example, after swapping of the two sentences, they can be: Bryan eats a lot of masks and Peter wears trendy bananas.
  3. Discuss among your team members to choose 3 to 4 emotional types from last week. You can also refer to the Wheel of Emotions (reference below) to make your choices.
  4. Categorize all your sentences (around 30) to each of the emotional type that makes sense to you.
  5. Assign a color for each emotional type and color code the sentences according to what you marked in step 4.
  6. Keep the list in a shared Google document of your group.

Part 3 (consolidation – 15 minutes)

  1. Arrange the 3 to 4 emotions in linear order (time) to create the dramatic arc (reference below).
  2. Pick a sentence from each emotional type and arrange them according to the dramatic arc order.
  3. Try to make sense out of them. If not, you can swap with other sentences in the same emotional type.
  4. You can also make up some places and consolidate the characters in order to make more sense of your new story.
  5. Summarize your story in a shared Google document of your group.

Part 4 (visualization – take home)

  1. Create 4 sketches corresponding to the dramatic arc, with your chosen visual style and reference and show us next week (19 March) in the shared Google drive folder.

Music samples

The following links are a number of sample music and its corresponding interpretation with moving images using the sound spectrum. Each pair comes with an MP3 audio and an MOV video files.

Exercise

You will select one piece of sound/music from the above list to work with your dancing exercise. Apparently, the music here and the background music you danced with are totally unrelated.

Class exercise

Each group will discuss among yourselves (through WhatsApp?) to decide which piece of music will be your favorite. After the discussion, share with us in around 3 minutes how your group come up with the decision and what you have analyzed in the process.

Take home exercise

Go back to your dance image sequences. Use your selection of music picked up in class. Study the rhythm patterns with the help of the corresponding video. Transform your image sequence into a digital flip book with around 100 frames. Use a Google Slides shared document to keep your flip book. Insert the music at the first slide with auto play. You can use whatever means to create the flip book images, including drawings, collage, digital illustration, laser pointer, etc. It is not necessary to have a representational or figurative drawings.

After you finish the flip book, put your document in the corresponding group folder. Show us the result next week (12 March).

This is a Sample Google Slides document for your reference.

Final project amendment

To cater for the E-Learning environment, the original animation project will be modified to simplify the technical requirements.

Format
Digital flip book with Google Slides, or similar online tool, as co-working platform

Duration
Around 180-200 frames

Content
Each group is free to choose the theme, topic, background and characters. Nevertheless, the animation has to include at least three emotional states in the whole duration. The emotional state can be the following:

  • Happiness
  • Sadness
  • Indifference
  • Despair
  • Hatred
  • Anger
  • Peaceful
  • Compassion
  • Jealousy
  • Pride
  • Fear
  • Others

For example, you can create an animation with the following sequence of emotional states

Despair -> Hatred -> Anger -> Compassion

You can also refer to the dramatic arc in narrative studies that we’ll cover in next week.

Use of audio is optional in this assignment. Since you will be operating the playback of the animation, you can also consider the performance aspect of the artwork. Part of the rhythm is controlled by the students who are pressing the arrow keys.
